Program Summary

This program aims to enhance clinicians’ skills in initiating and engaging in both conversations as well as basic treatments for the sexual problems of patients. It will provide a framework for initiating such conversations which is often a major challenge for both providers and patients, due to anxiety in both parties as well as cultural norms. It will provide an overview of the most common sexual problems in men and women, including specific guidelines needed to make a valid diagnosis.

The program will include a framework based upon a focus on the multiple causal factors which underlie most sexual problems, and which are often ignored. These include etiologies which are physiological/biological, psychological, and relationship based as well as the very interaction between these factors. This assessment/ diagnostic approach can be used to help psychotherapists decide upon, and in consultation with the patient, implement a plan of treatment, which may often include referrals to a specialist, including communication with their physician. Overall, the focus will be upon normalizing conversations about sex, reducing stigma, and improving both problem treatment assessment and treatment outcomes through informed and empathetic care.
