Program Summary

During this workshop, participants will gain both a conceptual and an applied understanding of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This workshop will have experiential components, group work, and lecture material to assist each participant in learning:

  • The six domains of ACT
  • Why acceptance is difficult for people, and what to do about it
  • How to make mindfulness practical for clients
  • What to do when clients are resistant to mindfulness exercises
  • How ACT relates to other empirically-supported therapies.

Because ACT is helpful for a variety of clinically relevant concerns, case examples will be used throughout the workshop, and may include social phobia, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, anger management, and the usefulness of mindfulness in working with parents of children with behavioral disorders.
