Hudson Valley Psychological Association

SUPPORT GROUPS:

Many people find it helps to work through problems or to increase self-knowledge and self-acceptance by attending a "support group." A variety of support groups are available through community based and self-help organizations such as the 12-step programs and the American Red Cross. Some support groups are run by credentialed, mental health professionals but many are not. A listing of groups NOT overseen by HVPA members can be found here.

GROUP THERAPY:

A number of professionally trained psychotherapists offer group therapy in the Hudson Valley. Some of these therapeutic groups provide opportunities to learn about and manage one's own problems by participating in a group of peers who have a similar diagnosis or difficulty. Other groups are designed to help members understand the ways in which they affect and respond to others by experiencing and examining feelings and behavior of themselves and other group members.

It is always a good idea to ask a provider about his/her training and experience in a particular treatment issue or methodology. As with any other specialized form of treatment, psychologists who provide group psychotherapy typically obtain specialized training ranging from graduate-level coursework in group behavior and facilitation, experiential training in group dynamics, and supervised internships as a group leader, to membership in professional organizations for group psychotherapists and certification by the National Registry of Certified Group Psychotherapists.
